D.Gray-man - chapter 043 [Apr. 21st, 2005|06:45 pm]
[mood | sore]

Just as a note, I've been posting a lot of my older reviews and such to the journal and adding them to the memories, which is surprisingly time-consuming. Posting this here as it's an actual reaction post to the chapter and spoilers abound, of course.

--

So, I was reading D.Gray-man chapter 43 and talking with Vikki the other day and I realized that I had some guesses for where the storyline might be going that I wanted to jot down. I am crap for guessing where manga storylines usually go, but I figure the one time I'll be able to predict something, it'll be the time I don't write it down. Can't have that, now can we?

[ D.Gray-man, chapters 001-022 ] [Mar. 19th, 2005|08:28 am]
[mood | accomplished]

And now for a new post.

*sigh* I don't know why I'm attempting to write a post on this manga, since I'm only in the middle of volume three, which is hardly enough time to get a proper feel for the series or the characters, but... something about this series is calling to me, something about it has drawn me in and I know I'm going to be stuck on it for awhile. But I'll get into that more in a bit.

And, now, probably far too many words about yet another Shounen JUMP manga that has made me its bitch. (Note: There will be spoilers for the first 22 chapters, but seeing as this is really just the beginning of the storyline, this is mostly set-up and the first few cases, I'd cautiously recommend braving ahead anyway.)

Also, way too many embedded images, but I just could NOT resist adding more of Komui in. Despite that he's not the main character, really.

Marchen Prince // Merchant Prince // MeruPuri: Please Be Naked, My Prince! [Mar. 3rd, 2005|02:53 pm]
[mood | cold]

Marchen Prince // Merchant Prince // MeruPuri: Please Be Naked, My Prince!

My first attempt at a coherent review in a long time and I wouldn't have guessed that it'd be about a shoujo series, much less for one that probably barely has an English fandom (not that I've looked much yet) or that I'd ever heard of more than in passing when I was skimming the Daily Manga listings. I sat down with this series earlier tonight and I cranked out all seventeen chapters that had been scanslated with only one break in between and I enjoyed every minute of it.

This would be my attempt to not suck at trying to pull more fans in.

And, yes, I gave this fangirl essay a title. SHUT. UP. (It's from a splash page in the manga, but it's still a title. >E)

Marchen Prince // Merchant Prince // MeruPuri: Please Be Naked, My Prince! )

NEXT UP, NO REALLY: Initial D. Because Chrissie has reminded me of how much I love that series and *gasp!* there are MORE THAN THREE SANE FANS IN THE FANDOM NOW! (Also, fic, because good stuff has been posted lately. *___*)(Damn you, Meg, I GET NOTHING ELSE DONE WHEN I TALK TO YOU. *fist shake of rage*)

REPOST: Harukanaru Toki no Nakade - episode 02-05 [Feb. 3rd, 2005|01:49 pm]
I keep meaning to slowly repost some of these longer posts because I do want to eventually keep everything in a neat, organized journal and they're good reviews, I like to think. Will probably be out of order as I sort through my archives.

~

Before I get started--I watched both the Full Metal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell: STAND ALONE COMPLEX (Or COMMITEE in the dub?) dubs on Cartoon Network. I... was not impressed by the FMA dub, Ed's voice was really off to my ear, Al's voice was good, but he could not act. Lust's voice sounded right, but very flat. There were some over/under emoting problems in intense moments, too.

The GitS:SAC dub was awesome, though. Amazingly done, so very easy to listen to and fit with everything. I could honestly watch the dubbed version of the series the whole way through and be terribly pleased as far as I could tell. (The plot was just as hard to follow in the dubbed version as the subbed, too. @___@ This isn't a series you can watch with only half of your attention.) And! And! They kept the OP! I loved that song! And while they cut off the ED, they still kept it and I love that song! I was terribly pleased.

Anyway. I slacked off on HaruToki for awhile because I'd gotten caught up in other things and [info]amanecer has ABANDONED ME AND WOE IS ME FOR THAT, so it took me awhile, but I finally got around to watching all of the raws and the first two subbed episodes. (Still haven't seen the third one yet, but I'd like to wait for A-Keep if I could, since Aoi's version doesn't play on my DVD player, boo.) I wanted to write down my thoughts before it'd been so long since I'd seen them that I'd forgotten the little details, wanted to write down my impressions and thoughts, since that helps me get an even stronger feel for the characters.

It's. Um. Well. Long. Not my longest, I'm sure, but long. A little over 5 pages worth in WordPad. And incredibly spoilery for Harukanaru Toki no Nakade episodes 01 through 06. If you don't want to know what happened, don't click, because I detail just about everything I could (not that the finer details are spoiled, but if you're super-strict about these things) and I capped the hell out of the episodes. 300+ for almost all of them. ....jeez.

Fic archives, Death Note, and Yakitatte! Japan [Jan. 12th, 2005|08:39 pm]
Preface: I originally wrote this post a few weeks ago, but never posted it to [info]beckymarie because I just never got around to it. I figured it was as good as anything to lead off the new posts here with. ....blah.

Anyway. Keep in mind that this is very dated.

I've been watching the whole recent FMA fanfic archiving kerfluffle with interest--I really have no major stakes in either side, no deep feelings for either party, I just like the meta discussion. One thing I've noticed from reading both anax's original post and the fandom_wank thread, is the debate about how "publishing rights" parallels apply to fanfic and it's not exactly a clear issue, but this subthread got me thinking. The comparison of fanfic archive = library was a good comparison and I think I get where the commentor is coming from, but it also made me think, "How would people on-line react if more archives were like real libraries that archived any book they pleased to, regardless of how the original authors felt?"

I have no doubt that fandom would have an absolute FIT. )

All right, all right, enough wank. Time for something much more silly. I haven't actually been watching much anime lately, but I've read a little bit of manga. The other night, when reading with Vikki, I caught completely up on Death Note and I'd forgotten how much I actually do like the series. Death Note - some spoilers up through the 30s and 40s-ish, I think? )

On to the next series that I've been having fun with: Yakitate!! Japan. Now, it seems like a lot of people have been going nuts over the series lately, but my reaction continued to be, "It's a series about MAKING BREAD. *BREAD*. No way am I reading that." And I remained strong, despite Aki writing a couple of fics, despite seeing a fair amount of discussion for it. Then [info]_hissori goes and talks about it a little more (not to mention, she put up downloads for it--thus, all her fault, yesss) and my curiosity is roused by the promise of crack. (This post of hers is probably better than anything I'm going to be able to come up with here, by the way.) So, what the hell, I'll give the first volume a shot. Potential SPOILERS for Yakitate!! Japan volumes 1-2 )

And, finally, Anipuri 164:
1) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG OISHI. *dies*
2) Coherency is overrated. SQUEE SQUEE SQUEE. Not quite as good as the manga, but like I'm going to complain. SQUEE SQUEE SQUEE.
3) Ooh, yay, they gave us a moment of TezuOishi 'shippage at the end, too! ♥
4) Loved, loved, loved the chibi bumper.
5) EEEEEEEEEEE LOOK AT WHAT NEXT WEEK IS HOORAY!
6) *DANCES SOME MORE*

House - 1x01 - 1x04 [Jan. 12th, 2005|08:37 pm]
Well, I didn't want to jump directly into babbling about House without at least providing a base of where I'm coming from with this series, so this commentary is a few weeks old. Anyway, the show has become one of my favorites of the season already, even with Desperate Housewives and Lost being such knockout hits for me. House - 1x01 - 1x04 )

[ Graduation Day, War Games, Nightwing #100, and Astonishing X-Men #1-6 ] [Dec. 23rd, 2004|08:56 am]
I've been neglecting comic books lately (which, god, even pre-date my anime fascination, I think?) and since Noel's been getting back into them, I've been trotting along right behind her. Anyway. My summation of recent DCU comic storylines--BIG BIG BIG SPOILERS for anything mentioned. Like, totally spoiling the end of it, if you were gonna read, skip this post, blah, blah, blah. Also, poaching from myself a little bit because I wanted this all in one big post. Which means it's gonna be LONG. And overly nice in some spots and probably overly critical in others.

Also, probably not that interesting to non-comic geeks. Gradutation Day )

Clow/Yuuko = <3333 [Dec. 13th, 2004|08:53 am]
Why I really shouldn't be allowed to talk to people after I read manga: (Much love to </a></b></a>[info]rubyd, </a></b></a>[info]shiroibara, and </a></b></a>[info]vikki for putting up with my disjointed ramblings.)

I've been catching up on Tsubasa RESERVoir Chronicles and XXXholic recently and while I knew I liked TRC, XXXholic is surprising me with how absolutely fascinated by it I've become. The background world and the characters. I have such mad love for Yuuko. She is PURE EVIL. Poor, poor Watanuki. I have also been convinced that Clow/Yuuko would be the greatest thing just about ever. Then I had a conversation with </a></b></a>[info]rubyd: Clow/Yuuko = <3333 (potential XXXholic spoilers?) )

I've been watching anime and browsing anime blogs lately and... I want one. I want one so badly I can practically taste it. It's practically what I do in this journal already (anime blogging), so I think I could do it. Then I remember how I'm really bad at writing reviews lately and think I'd abandon it after a couple of months. And then I think, well, I keep up with the recs journal pretty well.... And then I think, "Oooh, TV watching blog! I've been watching Lost and Desperate Housewives this season and once Alias starts back up and then I could talk about The Green Screen Show and--!!" and then my head explodes.

Well, now that I'm feeling better and life seems calmer, I must write a really long-winded post! :O!

I've been browsing through the articles and interviews posted at </a></b></a>[info]thedailyshow (as well as the reactions/discussion in the comm itself) and I can't say I'm really surprised at any of the current backlash going on right now. With the number of interviews Jon's been getting lately (notably the Crossfire interview, but also stuff like on CSPAN2 or 60 Minutes or what have you), with the election coming up so soon, it's really not that surprising and I find myself sort of sitting on the fence.

[ HaruToki 01 subbed & Bleach 01-02 subbed ] [Oct. 13th, 2004|11:43 am]
I finally managed to get my hands on the first subbed Harukanaru Toki no Nakade episode last night and I was amused to note that I got the idea of the episode from just the raw, that I wasn't really surprised by much at all. I think the thing that I didn't pick up on most was Tomomasa's, "Oh, it looks like my joke has gone too far...." when Akane's power was flaring up around her. Though, I loved that because, HAHAHAHA, TOMOMASA-DONO I LOVE YOU. ♥ That was just like him. XD (And still made my knees turn to Jell-O, too. *__* Inoue Kazuhiko's voice is the most gorgeous voic on the planet, I'm conviced.)

[ Harukanaru Toki no Nakade - 01 (raw) ] [Oct. 7th, 2004|10:02 am]
So, after much frustration and swearing at the torrent file, I finally managed to get the raw of HaruToki episode 01 into my hot little hands. Which means, fangirl squealing, of course! ♥ I know, I know, I should be talking about Prince of Tennis and I imagine that there's only a tiny fraction of the people on my friends page that are interested in some silly dating game-based anime, but I~ don't~ care~ ^_~

[ quick edit ] This post was solely about my reaction to the raw of the first episode, if you're curious about HaruToki, I probably have better posts up in my Harukanaru Toki no Nakade section (....WTF? Why does it say "Juku" instead of "Toki"? I can't imagine that I'd have made that mistake again, I've been calling it HaruToki for ages... anyway.) This post is probably your best bet if you're looking for info. */self-pimp* [ /quick edit ]

I steal the OTP meme from </a></b></a>[info]absenceofmind and then add my own to it, because a) I'm a dork and b) I'm always fascinated by what people consider their favorite series, I'm not sure why, but I am. Also, I've done the last one before, but after reading so much of HanaKimi, well... I had to re-evaluate where I'd put it on the list. XD

I'm adding little blurbs because god forbid any post I make should be under the 5,000 word limit. ~_~ No one else should feel obligated to do that, though. It's just my own sense of crazy that compels me to do it. I'm terribly curious to know where other people rank their favorite series/OTPs/etc. +___+

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e [vague spoilers?] [Sep. 27th, 2004|06:20 am]
So. HanaKimi has been eating my brain lately. Which means it's time to make a big, long fangirly post and get it out of my system because I want to talk about it, since the lack of fandom is driving me crazy. Or else it's because I'm all cranky that no one has written AkihaxUmeda smut and this is my outlet for frustration. I'm pretty sure it's one or the other. ^_~

Note: There will likely be SPOILERS in the following post, but I will try not to spoil anything hugely major or that happens at the end of the series. (Hell, I haven't even read the last seven chapters myself and if anyone spoils them for me, I'll BITE YOUR FACE OFF. Well, no, I won't, but I'll probably cry and you don't want me to cry, right?) There will be vague spoilers for turns of events--who develops feelings for whom, who will be turned down/rejected by whom, the general plots of arcs in the middle of the series and such.

MOVIES: Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings [Sep. 14th, 2004|06:27 am]
Two things in this post. One, downloads, because it's been awhile. >_>;; Then, two, movies.

* - Okane ga nai 4 - Okane ja kaenai.zip</a> - Fourth drama CD for the Okane ga Nai series, same as the previous three. I have no idea what storylines in the manga these cover individually, if they're even in order or what, but, hell, for Ishida Akira and Kosugi Juurouta, I don't need to know what storylines they're about to know I want them. ^_~ Just under 70MB

* - Saiyuki - Drama CD 8</a> - Same as before, of course, ~50MB, about an hour or so, the freetalks make me howl with laughter, Ishida Akira, Seki Tomokazu, Houshi Souichirou, and Hiroaki Hirata (whose name I always have to look up. ~_~

Speaking of Saiyuki... I'm actually almost done with the first manga (I've just started volume 9) and I'm really enjoying this series. Movie fangirling: Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings )
